Islanders @ Flyers: Game 9
SUMMARY:
Flyers are still struggling to play a full 60 minute game, but as has been the story this season, they found a way to win the game, albeit in OT, but a win is a win, and the Flyers will take it.
PERIOD ONE:
This was the best period for the Flyers tonight. They outplayed and outscored the Islanders in this period, but it would be their only great period. Flyers started hot, with Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux working a perfect give-and-go to secure the Flyers first goal of the game to make it 1-0 just 3:38 into the game. Kevin Hayes would make it 2-0 a little more than ten minutes later as James van Riemsdyk made a beautiful cross ice pass that Hayes was able to fire past Varlamov at 13:55. The period ended with shots tied 6-6.
PERIOD TWO:
The second period was a bit of a nightmare for the Flyers as they once again coughed up their 2 goal lead. Islanders first goal came 7:31 into the frame as the Flyers were running around in their own zone and an Eberle shot somehow popped over Carter’s glove and in as it appeared Carter was anticipating a cross ice pass that was either flubbed or faked(replays that were shown weren’t helpful in figuring this answer out). The Islanders tied it at 11:46 off another bad defensive shift for the Flyers as Scott Mayfield flung a shot on net and beat Carter to tie it at 2. Islanders outshot Flyers 10-4 in the period.
PERIOD THREE:
There was no scoring in this frame, but that was due in large part to Carter standing tall in his best period of the game and keeping the Islanders from scoring. Islanders outshot Flyers 11-4 in the final frame.
OVERTIME:
The Islanders managed one OT shot that was a legit chance that Carter stood tall on. The Flyers took possession and Scott Laughton out waited Varlamov and snapped the puck into a yawning net to secure the extra point for his team and help them advance to 6-2-1 on the season.
